Planning Area

The International District (ID) is one of the most diverse areas in Albuquerque with many immigrant families settling in the neighborhood. The area is also home to more Black and Native American households than other parts of the city. There are many individuals and community organizations in the ID dedicated to serving their neighbors in varying capacities, such as providing direct services to unsheltered neighbors, finding creative solutions to house community members in need, providing resources to local entrepreneurs, and prioritizing equitable health outcomes. Residents in the ID also face some of the highest levels of crime, poverty, and substandard housing in the city. While there have been public investments in recent years, the ID continues to face many of the same outcomes that have persisted for decades.

The International District is bounded by San Mateo Blvd. to the west, Wyoming Blvd. to the east, Lomas Blvd. to the north, and Gibson Blvd. and Kirtland Air Force Base to the south but excludes Expo New Mexico, the state fairgrounds. The area is located south of Interstate 40 and east of Interstate 25 in southeast Albuquerque. The ID includes multiple sub-neighborhoods-- South San Pedro, Elder Homestead, Trumbull Village, La Mesa, and Fair West—which encompass approximately 2,000 acres.

The three Public Housing target sites are Grove, Pennsylvania, and Wainwright Manor, which collectively include 98 units that will be the focus of this grant. Grove and Pennsylvania are located in Trumbull Village, and Wainwright Manor is located in South San Pedro.
